Midway Island Revisited

PDF Print Email

Hello friends. I've had quite an adventure this week. My trip to Midway Island - Midway Atoll national Wildlife Refuge was filled with mixed emotions. Midway is one of my favorite places in the world. I lived there for two years when I was a young man in the US Navy. The island has since been put into the hands of the US Fish and Wildlife Service for safe keeping. My mixed emotions involve my love of the island and its beauty and the excitement to be able to return mixed with the lack of upkeep and the degradation of the island since the US FWS has taken it over.

I was there to witness and be a part of the 70th Anniversary Ceremony of the Battle of Midway; the pivotal battle in the Pacific of World War II. I was privileged to have been a part of the special day. I was able to meet and chat with two amazing men who were survivors of the battle.

While I was there I photographed the island. I have only had time to process two photos so far. I will be posting more in time. Until then here is a photo of one of the natives of the island. This is a White Tern, commonly referred to as a Fairy Tern.

Enjoy. :)

I was on Midway Is. from 1967 till Oct 1968. My father was an officer in the Navy. Graduated from George School.
I have no photos, as they were left with the late ex-husband. He was a weatherman there 67-68. I do have one large fish ball. Yes, it was my favorite place to live.

my father was stationed there, and my mother and i were there as well--we are part of a very exclusive group of civilians, as families were allowed to live there for only a brief while. we have family film of the albatross nested in our yard, and a very small me next to the massive birds; my mother has stashed the film, so i have yet to have it digitized. i actually have a memory of seeing an albatross fly into the side of one of the only 2-story buildings, and slide down, cartoon-style! i would love to visit there some time, but doubt it will happen. thanks for sharing.
