The Columbia River Gorge is one of the most remarkable waterfall landscapes in North America. Within a short stretch of highway, dozens of waterfalls spill from basalt cliffs, each with its own character, light, and photographic potential.

I have been leading photography workshops in the Columbia River Gorge since 2013, and long before that it was a place I knew well. I once lived in the small community of Bridal Veil, back when there was still a town there, and these waterfalls became part of my everyday surroundings. Over the years I’ve learned how the light moves through the Gorge, when each location is at its best, and how to photograph these places in a way that goes beyond the typical postcard view.

During this workshop we will photograph many of the Gorge’s most iconic waterfalls as well as some that are often overlooked.

This workshop is designed for more than a tour of these incredible places. It’s also for photographers who want to improve both their technical skills and their ability to see compositions in complex landscapes. We will work with shutter speed, composition, and the use of filters to create strong waterfall images. I’ll also share the techniques I use in the field to simplify chaotic scenes and build photographs with strong foregrounds and leading lines.

Because the waterfalls are close together, we are able to spend our time photographing rather than driving. Many locations involve short hikes on established trails, allowing us to reach excellent viewpoints without long or difficult hikes.

The Columbia River Gorge has been a favorite place of mine for decades, and this workshop is an opportunity to experience it the way I have come to know it — slowly, thoughtfully, and with a camera in hand.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is open to photographers of all skill levels who want to improve their landscape photography while exploring one of the most beautiful waterfall regions in North America.

Difficulty Level

Most locations involve short hikes on established trails. Distances typically range from a few hundred yards to about a mile. Some trails include moderate elevation gain and steps, but the pace of the workshop will be relaxed with plenty of time for photography.

What to Bring

Participants should bring a tripod, wide to mid-range lenses – 14mm-200mm or similar. Filters: A circular polarizer is highly recommended. Neutral density filters can also be useful for controlling shutter speed when photographing moving water. A full gear list will be provided before the workshop. “Can I use my phone”. Yes. There are opportunities to use your phone’s camera to its best potential. I do recommend a tripod for it.
