My Favorite Photos from 2024

My Favorite Photos from 2024 – As another year comes to a close, I’m taking a moment to reflect on what has been an unforgettable year behind the lens. I traveled from the rugged coastlines of Oregon and California to the wild beauty of Alaska, the peaceful bayous of Texas, and the surreal landscapes of Iceland. Honestly, it still feels like a dream.

One of the highlights of the year was working alongside an amazing group of world-class photographers through @destinationearthphototours. That opportunity came thanks to my good friend Chris Byrne @chrisbyrnephotography. I’m also incredibly grateful for my workshop teammate and friend Alyce Bender (@abenderphoto), who continues to bring inspiration and energy to every adventure. Sometimes, I just have to stop and shake my head. I never imagined this life when I first picked up a camera.

Kicking Off the Year on the Oregon Coast

To start the year, we headed to the southern Oregon coast. Our first stop was the small town of Yachats, where we photographed the powerful waves crashing into Thor’s Well. From there, we made our way to Bandon. We explored sea stacks, tidepools, and sea caves along the beautiful shoreline.

After that, we continued south to Brookings, which became our home base for a few days. It was the perfect location for exploring the Samuel Boardman Scenic Byway. Along the way, we photographed Natural Bridges, Secret Beach, and even spent time among the towering redwoods just across the California border. Every stop brought something new and inspiring.

Back to the Last Frontier: Alaska

Shortly after that trip, Darlene and I traveled to Alaska to lead another incredible Alaska Experience workshop. First, we photographed the upper alpine scenery at Hatcher Pass. Then, we made our way to the Matanuska Glacier for some truly surreal ice landscapes.

In addition, we chartered a private boat from Whittier into the stunning Prince William Sound. We also had the chance to photograph bears on the Kenai Peninsula and soak in the breathtaking views along the Turnagain Arm. Even though the schedule was full, it somehow still felt peaceful. That’s the magic of Alaska.

Iceland: A Land of Magic and Puffins

Later in the year, I had the chance to return to Iceland. I was honored to co-lead a workshop with Chris Byrne and Destination Earth Photography Tours. Not only did we visit some of the island’s most iconic locations, but we also ventured off the beaten path.

One of the highlights was visiting a remote village where we photographed puffins up close. The experience was unforgettable. Iceland continues to amaze me every time, and I’m already looking forward to going back.

Stillness in the Southern Swamps

Toward the end of the year, I made my way back to Uncertain, Texas—a tiny town on the Texas-Louisiana border, and Caddo Lake. There, I co-led our third workshop season with Alyce Bender. Once again, we photographed the haunting bald cypress forests rising out of the water. Draped in Spanish moss and bathed in early morning mist, these trees never fail to leave a lasting impression.

Although this wasn’t a brand-new location, returning to familiar places often brings new creative inspiration. Each season brings different light, weather, and moods—and that’s what makes it so special.
