Dead ox Ranch 2024 – August 16-17-18

It’s time once again to prepare for our annual Dead Ox Ranch Photographers Campout August 16-17-18. This year we will be looking forward to the Moon setting at about 9:00 PM and some Perseid meteors and a hope for clear skies. This is an all weather event, but the chances of clear skies are very good in eastern Oregon in August. We have a lot of fun things to photograph at or around the Dead Ox Ranch.

The Dead Ox Ranch Photographers Campout is an annual event where photographers can meet, photograph and share while we learn new skills that will move our photography forward. It’s also a great place for photography friendships to begin. We become one big family at the Dead Ox Ranch.

The workshop/campout will be concentrating on creating night photography but there’s some excellent things to photograph during the day. The Snake River at Hells Canyon is less then an hour away from the ranch.. We will be going to some locations in the area as well as taking advantage of the many eclectic things at the ranch.

The Dead Ox Ranch is a historic ranch that’s the home of our hosts Mike and Janie Morrissey. They open up the area to us to camp. Prepare for a camping experience. Their home/living area is private.

We have one area set aside for motorhomes and camping trailers. Tent camping is provided in a dispersed area around the home. We try not to set up our tents in the yard as we use the area
during the weekend.

• Bring your own food and a way to prepare it. Bring your own ice as well.
• The town of Baker is about a half hour from the ranch in case you need supplies.
• We have a common area but cooking and refrigeration is extremely limited.
• Dress for the weather. It should be warm but we’ll be shooting at night. Bring a jacket.
• We have an outside shower but it’s primitive and popular, especially in the morning.
• Be prepared. We’re camping.

● Camping gear

● Bug repellant
● Appropriate clothing for the weather
● Food/Beverages
● Ice

Camera gear:
● Camera
● Lens – 18-55 or wider for cropped sensor cameras – 24-70 for full frame cameras, f/2.8 if possible – Optional lens, but recommended, is a 55-200 cropped sensor or a 70-200 full frame.
● A sturdy tripod is a must
● Remote Trigger (Programable)
● Laptop computer with Lightroom / Photoshop installed (Other editing software is welcome)
